My family's sacrifice

Hello readers! I hope that all of you had a great January and that you guys are doing well! This week we discussed the article “The Cost of Getting Ahead” (Smith, et al.) and the article was about research conducted on Mexican families that moved to the United States. It went into detail about the sacrifices that the families had to make and the consequences of those sacrifices. As I was reading the article I could not stop thinking about my family and I went through the same situation. In the article the families moved out of necessity or to give their children a better future. My family moved to the united states for safety reasons. Back in Mexico we were doing well and as we were progressing people began to get upset and started to treat us differently. We started to get threats telling us to shut down our store and if we did not do so there would-be severe consequences. My family contacted the authorities, but the police could not do anything because there was not enoug...

Family Theories

Hi guys! Welcome back to my blog! I hope all of you are having a great 2021. This week we discussed family theories, this week’s topic was quite interesting to me and I will say though these are labeled as family theories I am convinced that these theories apply to any relationship. I thought that these theories were super cool since I was able to analyze my family and relationships when thinking about the theories. The theories that we discussed are Systems theory, exchange theory, symbolic interaction theory. Systems theory is a very simple theory in the way that it analyzes groups (family, couples) as a whole. Whole in the aspect that they are one working together. So, when we look at a family with our system theory eyes, we see the parents and children. We see that they all work together to make the family work. For example, the parents work together to nurture the kids into successful adults. Sometimes when there as problems in the family, let us say a father with a drinking p...

The Importance of Evaluating Media

Hello guys! Welcome back to my Blog!   This week for my class we talked about the importance of evaluating the articles and the media. It is important to for us to be aware of our information is coming from the research it often cited in peer reviewed and journal and in a variety of articles. During this week I learned how easy it is for us to be tricked; it is easy for publishers to twist statistics or even misinterpret them. Also, some articles use bad research because it proves their point; that is not the way research should be used. It is wrong for publishers to use bias research or go out of their way to conduct their bias research with the intention to prove their point.   An example that we went over in class was the APA (American Psychological Association) brief. If you do not know what the APA briefs is allow me to explain… the brief was written up to serve lawyers, and psychologist for the battle to prove that there are no significant differences when it comes to ra...

Family Trends

For my class we reviewed changing patterns in intimate relationships. Some of the key points we hit were premarital sex, cohabitation, delayed marriage, household size and women into the workforce. The pattern that caught my attention the most was cohabitation. Cohabitation means to be leaving with someone with whom you hold an intimate, sexual relationship outside of marriage. This form of living has dramatically increased in the last 60 years. It is now a very common thing for couples to participate in this form of living. I personally know several couples who are in a cohabitant relationship. I also have an aunt who now has two kids and has been living with his partner for the past 10 years but has yet to consider marriage. I am pretty sure that marriage is out of the picture and that they rather live the rest of their life as unmarried partners. I think this has direct correlation with another pattern that we talked about this week and that would be delayed marriages. Back in 195...
